Which Region to choose for your visit?

France is not only Paris and Cannes !

north west France

for exemple, is very rich in tourism, with 3 main regions not far from Paris :

  1. -Normandy : with the Mont-Saint-Michel, the D-Day beaches, Sainte-Thérèse of Lisieux, great food, wonderfull villages and landscapes, or the extremly wealthy city of Deauville.

  2. -Pays-de-Loire : with its Loire Valley castles and the french history attraction park Le-Puy-du-Fou.

  3. -Brittany : It’s not the most known place of France, cause there is no huge monument, BUT, it’s supposed to be the most beautifull part of the country. English or German tourists agree, and french often vacation there. Brittany is a keltic region. The main attractions are the beautifull little fishing ports. The most known places are Saint-Malo, Carnac for its keltic monuments, Pont-Aven for the painter Gauguin, the enclosed churches of the north, the city of Quimper, and of course the forest of Merlin and the knights of the round table : Brocéliande.

Atlantic COAST

We already spoke of le Puy-du-Fou in the north. The vendean coast, and around Bordeaux, are appreciated by a popular tourism, for campings... Bordeaux is THE typical, classical (and so beautifull) french city. Also known for its wines, of course. Close to Spain, the Pays Basque is appreciated for its surf spots, and also for the traditions and foods of the Pyrénées mountains.

CENTRAL France

Dordogne (east of Bordeaux), or Ardèche (south of Lyon), are the favorites spots of the nature lovers in France. These areas are very sunny by summer, and the rivers great for swimming. The city of Lyon is very beautifull, and known for its Bouchons Lyonnais, restaurants where you can eat excellent Bistro cuisine.

South West

Toulouse, “the pink city” is known for its high quality of life, its food and rugby. On the Mediterranean, Carcassonne is a wonderfull medieval city to visit. The port of Collioure and the cathares castles are a must. You can visit Barcelona in Spain at the same time.

South East

Yes, Cannes is there ! But stop also in the “port of the stars”, Saint-Tropez, or visit the picareque coast of the Calanques de Cassis (close to Marseille). Another worth while visit is the wild landscapes of Camargue, and, to the north, you can visit Roman Provence with the cities of Avignon (the French Vatican), Orange, Arles or Beaux-de-Provence, and of course the beautifull Pont-du-Gard (roman bridge) all worth a stop.

For getting a visa you need a passport (your passport needs to have at least 6 months until expiration), a ticket in and out of France, proof of money and possibly of accommodations, two passport-sized photos, the visa fee in cash and proof of travel health/accident insurance with worldwide coverage.

Schengen visa allows its holder to travel freely to any other cuntry member of the European Union.

- France is the most visited country of the world, so international airports are almost in every region. TGVs (high-speed-trains) are all around France, and from Paris to Netherlands trough Belgium (and soon to Spain). The TGV Shuttle allows fast travels beetween London and Paris under the Channel. You can also easlily cruise by regular ferryboat lines from Ireland or U-K to the north-west ports of France (Normandy and Brittany) (here a website).

- Money : Euro is the money of the whole European Union, except the U-K.

- Driviers License : if you come for a short visit you are allowed to drive with your own national license.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Do I leave a TIP in restaurants/bars ?

A : No. Except if you expect a smile.

Q : Should I order the same dish twice to be sure to have enough to eat ?

A : Yeah, if you're American perhaps you'll be disappointed in the French portions, but at least you'll eat better.

Q : Do the French prefer us to speak in French or in English ?

A : If you speak in French, they won't answer in English !

Q : Should I hide the fact that I'm an American ?

A : Not if you're a pretty girl! In general the French are not as anti-american as they were during the Irak War.  The truth is French love America, but they don't like to admit it!

Q : Should I hide the fact that I'm English?

A : When they get a real rugby team in the UK, you will be licensed to say you are English!

Q : Will the Parisians burn my car ?

A : No, it's a kind of tradition : banlieues (suburbs) inhabitants burn EXCLUSIVELY their own cars (well, their neighboors ones to be exact, so don't go in dangerous places around Paris).

Q : May I be naked on the beach ?

A : Only on certain ones!

Q : Can I be dressed on naked beaches ?

A : People will look at you oddly if you continue to “watch the boats” for more than one hour !

Q : Will my return flight be 9 days late cause of the strikes ?

A : French do love to strike so it's always best is to call 24h before.

Q : Will the French public services (hospitals, firemen, policemen...) make me wait forever for them to answer the phone ?

A : Be patient, an operator will eventually answer you ! The French rarely hurry, customer service is not like in the US.

Q : Is it possible to see the “blue nights” (bombs) in Corsica?

A : No, the Corsicans respect the tourists and more importantly the money that they bring : no bombs in summer !

Q : Will my IDs and money be stolen in the Paris Metro ?

A : Hide important documents and money while riding the trains and buses ! This advice is especially important when you are in the touristy monuments of Paris (Louvre, Eiffel Tower...)

Q : Do I have to worry about thieves outside Paris?

A : Yes, always use caution in the Provence coast in particular (Marseille, Cannes, Nice), where thieves with motorcylces brake car windows even while you’re stopped at a red light !

Q : Is it possible to have wireless computer connections in French restaurants, hôtels... ?

A : As many as there are in the Sahara Desert! Well, just ask in a bar, they'll tell you if one of the nearby villages have wireless. In the hôtel chains you'll have a good connection, but often will have to pay an additional tax. In some McDonalds you can connect for free (and Americans will feel at home!). Anyway you can find cybercafés in every town and city.
